Adding found shells to my hermit crab tank?
I have a quick question about adding found seashells to my carribean land crab habitat. I wanted to add some for a more beach shore affect near my crab’s salt pool. My mom has a bunch of shells from a beach in south Florida, and theres some pretty big shells that almost look like cuttlebones that would be neat for crab climbing. Is it safe to add found seashells, and whats the best way to sanitize the shells? Should I just buy puka shell substrate instead?
Boiling in aquarium salt water for about 15 minutes is the best way as other people have already said. It is safe to add beach sea shells as long as they are boiled and cleaned.
best shell cleaning tools I’ve found is old tooth brushes and baby bottle cleaners.
You treat decoration shells the same way you treat their shells. If you find something on the beach first clean it off. soak it, boil it, let it dry off them put it in the tank.
The only think from the beach I caution about is sand and wood. Wood can be harder to sterilize and the sand may have bugs or pollutants in it.
