Fire Extinguishers: A Fire Safety Must-Have

There have been instances in the past that fires easily escalated because of the inability to contain it as early as possible because of the absence of a fire fighting device.  Things would have been different if there has been a powder fire extinguisher in a home when fire erupted due to some busted electrical wirings.  Lost of property and even of lives may have been avoided if there was just proper fire safety awareness.  If only.

Since the UK government has created the Regulatory Reform Order, each individual has then been given information on fire-related issues and the responsibility to ensure that their homes and work places are equipped with the required fire safety measures.  A fire extinguisher has then been mandatory in every house and establishment and the proper usage of it clearly disseminated.  This has not been easy because there are different kinds of fire extinguishers to perfectly match six different classes of fires.  The best way to go about this is to check the possible flammable materials in your home or workplace and from there get the kind of extinguisher that would best work against it.

Most homes have combustible solids such as paper, wood, and textile.  For this you require a water fire extinguisher to help you put off fires originating from these materials.  Likewise, there is the possibility of kitchen fires and definitely a water based extinguisher is not suitable for this and the same goes for fires due to electrical problems.  A dry powder fire extinguisher can help resolve these fires as well as automotive fires but there is the possibility of damaging electrical equipments because of the residue left behind that can cause corrosion.  For sensitive type of electrical equipments like computers, it is best to use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher.

As much as dry powder is a suitable agent for fighting fires, it cannot be used on enclosed spaces and even on public places like schools, hotels, and the like as using a powder fire extinguishing device produces a cloud that can obscure visibility that would make leaving the premises difficult.  Likewise, there is the risk of inhaling the chemical powder that would result to individuals having problems with their breathing.  A CO2 fire extinguisher is then recommended for use on such public locations instead of a powder fire extinguisher.  Households and establishments have then seen the necessity to equipped themselves with not just one but a couple of extinguishers that can appropriately fight off fires with different origins.

More often than not, homes have been equipped with a water fire extinguisher and a dry powder fire extinguishing device as these two extinguishers cover a whole lot of materials and situations.  Some establishments keep a different combination of fire extinguishing agents depending on the nature of business to and ensure that that have almost every eventuality covered but most of all designating responsible individuals for the proper usage of these extinguishers is the best thing to do to make sure that things would safely work out when fires do occur.
